About Me
I’m a Second-year Computer Science student @ Durham University with a passion for building things and a keen interest in software engineering and entrepreneurship. At the moment I’m exploring new technologies, building up my skills and preparing myself for industry.
What I’m Building
My main focus right now is AMAL POS, a mobile POS, inventory, and sales solution for micro-to-medium businesses (we already have our first three active users!).
The app was initially built to help small and pop-up shop owners in Nigeria (where I’m from), but due to low technical literacy and a resistance to software subscriptions in that segment, I pivoted to supermarkets and larger retail stores. Our long-term vision is to become the “OS for retail businesses,” adopting a Tesco-inspired, technology-first approach to modern commerce. By replacing bulky, expensive cash registers with a mobile-first solution, the app completely eliminates traditional hardware costs. For smaller shops, it puts their entire inventory and sales suite on a smartphone, while for larger supermarkets, it empowers floor clerks to instantly check out customers with fewer items to drastically increase sales velocity. Ultimately, we are combining seamless mobile checkout with robust data insights and analytics to completely redefine how retail enterprises operate.
Building an inventory management system hasn’t been easy. It uses an offline-sync architecture to help users in low network areas, so I’ve been diving deep into database schema design. I’m focusing heavily on leveraging ACID transactions to keep data reliable and consistent between the local sqlite storage and the cloud. This is still an ongoing challenge but I’m learning a lot, and improving it over time.
My Journey
My journey in tech began all the way back in year 4 when I got my first experience with programming through Kodu Game Labs. I remember creating a fun little racing game that taught me how to connect controls to virtual robots, and manage game state. Fast forward to 2020 (end of year 9), and I was reintroduced to programming when I found out about the CS50 course. I spent the next two summers diving deep into it, watching David Malan and Brian Yu explain concepts super well. This was my first real taste of CS and despite being really challenging, I found it incredibly rewarding.
This passion for building led me to doing an EPQ during my A-levels, where I challenged myself to develop a web application from the ground up using Django and Python. This project was a fantastic learning experience, and the site received over 3,000 visits and 900 unique users.
Over time I have gained experience developing full-stack applications using a range of technologies. For example, I built a fully featured delivery app (currently in development) with a Flutter/Dart frontend and a Django backend, along with a Next.js frontend for restaurant management. Check out my projects page for more.
Through these projects, I’ve gained hands-on experience with Docker, cloud computing, and even work extensively with LLM integrations. I’m always looking for new challenges and ways to expand my skills. My next step is to secure a software engineering internship for this summer to apply my skills in a real-world environment. My skills are solid and I’m eager to learn more.
